Some costume figure drawings about 2 weeks ago

So at the art club at my school, we had a professional model dressed in boxing gear and then some robes. These here are about 5 minutes. I used Bombay colored India Ink to fill in the figure shapes.

Tried a daily spitpaint

I think I did more drawing than painting, because the line is so strong in this one. Oh well, I'll learn. Glad I put some barf colors on top.

Vis dev midterm, and 3rd enviro sketch project

So last week was my vis dev/advanced illustration midterm,

Center: my b/w value study; Bottom left: my original concept; Bottom center: my rough tonal study; Bottom right: my corrected lineart
Version 1.0~

I was so dumb, I had a version that was updated with more flowers, but I saved this one to send in :P. And in my prop, I used a flower from the newer batch :Honestly, this started out as an excuse so I could just draw Utena flowers.

Old props: note to self, never bring them to class or mention them ever again. I got so much criticism over this page because I didn't organize it and fix it. But hey! It was supposed to just show where I was and where I went.

These are basically the notes I got from the critique:
Environment:
-change light to blue, which means shadows are warm and light is cool.
-use saturated rug version (I had two versions, the other one isn't shown here, it looked ugly)
-bags look like rocks :/. open some of the bags with loot spilling out
-trunk looks too much like a couch, probably need to change the notan a bit (my team leader suggested adding handles to the side, so I'll go with that later)
-maybe do artificial light from the lamp?
-lamp merges too much with cabinet (value-wise)
-be sure to explain the lighting, is it from the street or a ghost or something?
-do exterior environment as well so we can see Jiro's home from an exterior pov
-lighting itself has tangent with window, either move the center of the lighting or switch to another window design.
-and from my good friend: I diverted away from the style, and my color ver is too dark and doesn't follow the notan values
-and my notes:
---maybe add some brooms and stuff for a closet feel?
-----AND most importantly, finish your bg
-------which means, finish wallpaper too

Props:
-why are the color saturations placed on the wrong emphasis? why are there tangents and overlap with the items on the page why is this standing on that? whaaat? get rid of prop 1.0
-use b/w/g as an arbitrary color, versus opera pink, bright pink or any other color can affect your color sense

...........

Meanwhile, in environment sketching, we were supposed to design an environment that had a clear composition (the focus being composition), and feature 2 robot characters, one large, one small.

After these super rough concept ones, I chose 1 that I wanted to do no matter what and cleaned it up with proper perspective (happened to use 2 point), then added some tone.

Lots of line details. I was really inspired by Steven Universe and the backgrounds there. I love that show so much.

A tonal lay-in (nighttime)

I did better this time. My values were good, but the robots get lost in the buildings, so my professor suggested having the large robot be a giant in the background, while the small one stays at the edge of the small pier, and maybe just get rid of the submarine because it gets confusing. That's if I want a narrative. He also said that I could just get rid of all the characters and it would work for my portfolio. Ahhh, the magic p-word, portfolio. I think I'll have it ready by the end of this semester.

Working on characters for the story next, and sketchbook pages and stuff are coming..

Did some daily spitpaint

I saw my friend's post on daily spitpaint, and I thought, hey, that's a neat topic (garden of fireflies). However, I failed to see that this was for the yesterday, and I don't want to risk getting banned for posting too late or whatever, so I'm just posting this here and on my regular facebook page.
Originally, I wanted to try doing a girl and a skeleton boy leaning on each other playing with fireflies, and some of the fireflies would be in his skull head, but that's way too ambitious, and corny after I got the girl's head done, I changed it to this Vietnamese girl in the jungle catching fireflies.

I tried another topic (a wild goose chase), but it was just not as fun as I thought it would be, so I'm sort of quitting in the middle.

Status update 3/11

I just "finished" my assignment for environment sketching, a medieval street in 2 pt perspective. It looks really cartoony. I have been so swamped with school work, so it took me forever to finally sit down and clean up the lines.

So this is my sketch to work out some of the placements and shapes of the buildings. The only difference between these three is that there is a different wind vane used. I'm a little nit-picky.

Here's a cleaner version of those early sketches, in addition to scrapping most of the left side and foreground and just replacing it with something different.

Here is a simple tonal lay in to help me think in terms of local colors probably present.

And here are 2 lighting versions based on some copic lighting tests I did.

I have some plein air gouache paintings to do, and I think I'll start uploading them soon, since I've gotten to a point with gouache where I can handle them quite comfortably, even though I take 3xs as long as everyone else, and then some sketchbook pages I should include on this blog. I came up with a brief nursery rhyme, and I want to supply a simple illustration to represent it. It's for a subplot idea.

So busy, ahhhhh

I am so busy with school work, and I guess I'm pulling an all nighter tonight.
Working on some "notans" for environments, but I'm being very slow about it. I still need to finish the rest of these, and come up with another chunk for a different setting.

Doing some more work for environment sketching. Here's my progress so far.
And here is a refined red version of those same sketches.

Impromptu update on what I'm up to..

So I'm taking a visual development class. This is my second time doing it, and I'm kind of excited for it, because the art style we'll probably be going with is more challenging for me. Anyways, the first assignment is doing grayscale value studies of film noir-era works. I looked through Citizen Kane, Psycho, Laura, Twilight Zone, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents. I'm gonna look through some more after this.
Also, I'm taking environment sketching. I'm supposed to draw up a medieval town. I'm kind of on the fence about this class, because I feel very incompetent and I sort of want to take figure drawing classes with this other instructor, but it's at the same time (and different schools), so I have to decide whether I want to do this class, or focus on drawing the figure better. I'll probably just stick to this one, because I tricked my professor into thinking my work is good, ha ha! And because at least I'll have a better experience with drawing up environments? I don't know.. We'll see next week.
Medieval building silhouettes

Hah, what a difference between this cleaner one and the rough.

Also taking storyboarding and landscape painting, on top of working at my odd job and helping my dad with his furniture store, so I'm pretty busy (or at least I should be if I'm doing things right), yeeesh.
